speed 4 Months ago Karma: 0
Looking for a bit more speed. i have an x cat 13 inch SS prop, 50 HP Tohatsu, Boyesson reeds. The quickest i have managed is 38 mph. How can I get more speed? I have engine on it's lowest setting. middle setting it cavitates (hav'nt bothered with highest setting as i imagine cavitating will be worse. Have inflated boat as hard as possible. What more can i do? sharpening prop is not really an option (no facilities here for that).

Help!!!

Cheers

Forgot to mention.

Not sure of the prop pitch. I have a friend with a surf cat (gemini) which has a 30 HP Tohatsu. His has been clocked at 42mph so something ain't right.

It is. Hi Richard, thought of calling you b ut didn't want to be a pain. Have fitted reeds so engine really smooth and accelerates better. I'd just like to be hitting about 50mph. I am ordering a compressor attachment today so will be able to inflate to correct pressures.
Can you post the correct engine height for me and inflation pressures. .8 on bottom .6 on top I seem to remember. Hope all good. Not much wind here but plenty of sun and some swell coming in great for the boat.

Dave

Hi Dave,

Hope all is well, it's never a pain to hear from you. The engine should not be higher than 20mm of the transom on an X-Cat and that is in very flat conditions.I would check the pich of the prop, you could do with one arround 15. A cemi cleaver is a good allround prop.
Also check what point your engine is trimmed to.
On the engine clamp there is a pin that slides out. This pin has several holes into which it can be fitted. You should set it on the second one from the bottom.
I also noticed in the pics you sent me that you two guys in the boat wer pretty big, what do you guys weigh?
Do not worry about not being fast, the X-Cats ARE!!!! fast we are leading the P750s class in the national champs in ours.
I think it is just a case of prop and setup.

Top tubes 0.4 high jackers 0.9
Would be good if you could get down for a test sesh some day.

Let me know how you get on.
Rich.

Hi Rich

I will check it all over and see how it looks. Combined weight we have had is about 25 st (managed 38 mph). I haven't adjusted the tilt since I bought it so should be O.K.

No idea of the prop pitch (you sold it to me have you any idea???)

Am heading off on a road trip in July so may try to make it down.

All the best

Dave
